Dad drove to southern Arizona this week to pick up Gila Trout. He joined a team of 11 other fish biologists/technicians to electrofish the stream to catch the trout. It was a cold morning in Arizona (22 F) at 9500 feet of elevation, and even the stream had ice in it. This strain of Gila Trout is a the rarest of them all - less than 200 individuals are known to exist.
Dad was a little nervous transporting the 82 fish they caught back to the Hatchery, but they all made it safely. The Hatchery will spawn these fish in March and hopefully start re-building the population to re-stock the streams in southern Arizona and New Mexico.
